Head Coach James Johnson and a few of his players met with media today to discuss preparations and where the team is at before the Hokies’ first game against East Tennessee State this Saturday.

All signs point to the Hokies having a near injury-free lineup for their opening game, with Joey Van Zegeren being the only player mentioned when asked about the condition of the players.

Notes & Audio

Coach Johnson noted that his team, while progressing and gelling well, still has some schematic issues that need to be confronted. Saturday’s game will be a means of finding out exactly where this Hokies squad is. Johnson also said he is holding off on the scouting and game preparations until Thursday and Friday.

CJ Barksdale spoke highly of the new offensive system that Coach Johnson has implemented in his first season, citing the offense’s speed and looseness as a big reason why he and his teammates are excited. After slimming down this summer, Barksdale said he was able to add a consistent mid-range jump shot, an addition that will likely be explored in this new offense.

The Hokies will test out walk-on players throughout the season, searching for minutes to supplement and help out the eight scholarship players seeing most of the time on the court. Senior guard Erick Green echoed a sentiment that Coach Johnson brought up, claiming that he has seen a lot of good things on the court from two of the Hokies’ walk-on players: Will Johnston and Christian Beyer.

For a third straight game, Clemson defeats Tech
Written by Ryan Durham

Things could not have started better for the Hokies offense. The unit drove 58 yards on seven plays on their first drive en route to a touchdown. Then after a ridiculous Michael Cole interception on the ensuing drive, the Hokies drove down to the Clemson 18.

But after the unit failed to convert a fourth and one on the ensuing drive, the offense could only muster 17 points and 158 yards the rest of the game as Clemson rolled the Hokies 38-17.

 Injury Update

Signs continue to not look good for back-up center Caleb Farris and starting left Guard David Wang. Offensive line coach Curt Newsome said Tuesday that Farris is unlikely to play Saturday against Clemson. Wang did practice, but Newsome said he did not partake in contact drills and called his chances of playing Saturday “50-50.”

Wide receiver Marcus Davis said his shoulder is just fine and unlike cornerback Kyle Fuller, Davis did not seem to be in any discomfort while talking to us. Davis popped his shoulder out on his 47-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter against duke.

Notes & Audio

Newsome has every bit of confidence in Michael Via being the center for the Hokies, citing his versatility in addition to his preparation and knowledge of the playbook.

Runningbacks coach Shane Beamer said that he still plans to use Michael Holmes in the backfield and that he has packages that involve multiple backs in the backfield at one time. He did say, however, that “it’s not little league where everybody gets to play,” so while the smokescreens continue when it comes to the status of the primary runningback, it seems like the team will continue to pull a Mike Shanahan and go with the hot hand. Then again, who knows, maybe we’ll J.C. Coleman start and get most of the handoffs. Your guess is as good as mine.

Speaking of Coleman , fans have known that since he committed to Virginia Tech he has been all about the Hokies. However, there was a time where he wasn’t a very big fan of the program because they were recruiting him. In fact, the team’s two biggest rivals, West Virginia and UVA, reached out to him first. He also talked about his 86-yard touchdown run and how some in the locker room have picked on him a bit for his 67.5” frame.

Via said that there is not much of a difference between he and Andrew Miller as far as calling out assignments and handling the position's responsibilities. He also attributed some of the bad snaps, mainly thos coming in the shotgun, to rust and does not think it will be a problem going forward.

Davis talked about the big plays the Hokies have been making on offense the past couple of games and is not worried that they could play as a disadvantage against Clemson since it puts the Tigers offensive attack back on the field. Considering his open criticism of the team’s senior leadership this season, Davis also is proud of the way the team held together following the 20-0 first quarter against Duke. Davis has openly criticized the team’s senior leadership this season, most notably following the Hokies loss to Pittsburgh.

Injury Update

In case you missed it Sunday, starting Andrew Miller is done for the year after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured ankle he suffered against Duke. Miller is the only member of the Hokies starting unit to start every game last season.

The injury could arguably not have come at a worst time also, as his backup Caleb Farris is injured himself and indications are that it will be at least another week before he could possibly play, according to Beamerball.com. Us media vultures could not spot either Farris or starting left guard David Wang on the practice field today, but we will be able to talk to offensive coaches and players tomorrow. Therefore, a more accurate depiction of the two’s status for the Clemson game will come tomorrow.

Wide receiver Dyrell Roberts and defensive tackle Luther Maddy were in the blue jerseys, but they will play Saturday in all likelihood.

Notes & Audio

Virginia Tech’s defensive line contributed to all five of the Hokies sacks against Duke, which has defensive line coach Charlie Wiles very pleased. He also commented on the play of Dadi Nicolas and Tyrel Wilson, two reserve guys who have had an impact this season while on the field.

Defensive coordinator Bud Foster called Clemson’s highly potent offensive attack "a booger to prepare for,"acknowledging, like Wiles did, that the defense might give up a couple big plays over the course of the game (Note: Foster's comments at the very beginning refer to Clemson runningback Andre Ellington).

Cornerback Antone Exum said he will be the primary guy covering Sammy Watkins on Saturday, which will certainly be a huge test for him as a cover cornerback. He also talked about the defensive backs preparation for facing Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins, who he called a top-5 receiving duo in the country.

Maddy said he initially injured himself seven games ago against Georgia Tech. He also commented on his roommate Nicolas’s impact on the defensive line and the challenges of substituting and playing against Clemson's fast pace.

Hokies roar back for second ACC win
Written by Ryan Durham

Stop me if you have heard this before.

After the first quarter Virginia Tech found themselves struggling mightily, losing by a score of 20-0 and being out-gained on offense 150-92 while committing five penalties for 56 yards.

Considering the past two weeks, what if I told you the narrative of the story would be the Hokies dominance of the game?
