Page 1 of 3 ![]() Here at WUVT we have been observing more corporate stations that play their music using computer databases instead of actual CDs and records (if there’s even a live DJ at all) and we've decided that it’s time for WUVT to upgrade. Gone are our actual in-the-flesh DJs and in their places are killer robots whose evenness of vocal tone is only exceeded by the precision of their built-in laser bazookas. Our request line has been outsourced to a small island off the coast of New Zealand whose natives worship Tlong Tlong, Lord of the Coconuts. Best of all, however, we’ve purchased a supercomputer that tallies all the plays on WUVT 90.7 FM Blacksburg of every new album that was released in 2011! Actually I’m kidding about all that, so thank you greatly for counting up these plays Kevin. Tlong Tlong has a special place in Coconut Paradiso for you. That’s right, following is a list of the Top 20 Albums here at WUVT thus far in 2011, not based on the opinion of a musical crackpot such as myself or even a think tank of crackpots, but instead on actual numerical data that represents the collective opinion of WUVT’s beloved DJs. I and some other generously contributing folks at WUVT weren’t able to fully contain our inner musical crackpots however so a little information about each album has been provided. These numbers go up until June 26th, so things have changed a little on July 13th as I’m writing this. Gang Gang Dance is probably number 3 or 4, Thievery Corporation will be on this list soon. Mostly however this is the perfect midyear snapshot of what the DJs of one of more unorthodox college radio stations in the United States have been feeling thus far in 2011. Hope you enjoy reading this as much as you’ve enjoyed hearing these albums on WUVT over the last six months, and who knows what artists will own the airwaves for the remainder of 2011. Some big releases later this year include new Girls, St. Vincent, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Ladytron, Beirut, Neon Indian, Bjork, Zola Jesus and M83, but I've always been one to root for the underdogs. Every artist was an underdog at one point after all. Ian Marshall WUVT Music Director May 2010-August 2011 |
