Must-Hear: The Cool Kids Adding a new, funky-fresh feel to the hip-hop scene, The Cool Kids’ The Bake Sale has become one of this year’s must-hear albums. Hip hop hotties “Mikey Rocks” Reed from Chicago and Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersoll out of Detroit have brought back an old school sound in a new style with their debut album The Bake Sale. The bumping bass and original lyrics found on each of their tracks has led to their ever-growing popularity.
Released in May of this year, The Bake Sale was highly anticipated after the drop of their first single, “Black Mags.” The single’s video showcases the duo on their BMX bikes in 80’s gear riding around the neighborhood, filmed in black and white. If their style does not automatically catch your eye, their lyrics definitely will. The video showcases their bikes, from the color of the frame, to the spokes, to the pegs. Although rhyming about a simple subject, the Kids undoubtedly succeed in bringing a “level of coolness” back to bikes and the 80’s sound.
Tracks like “Gold and a Pager” and “ One Two” have made their way into the club scene throughout the country all thanks to The Kids relaxed rhymes and steady beats. These rhymes are what make the duo so easy to love. In their song “Cooler Than That,” Mikey Rocks starts off rapping about sitting on his couch eating a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. Who can’t relate to that? The track moves on to showcase old video games as well as what some would consider “out-dated” styles. As hip-hop artists today have become more focused on money, cars and fame, The Cool Kids offer a well-needed breath of fresh air for hip-hop fans.
Mikey and Chuck have successfully gained a fan base with the help of their Myspace page. Switching out the songs regularly, the duo give their fans a wide variety of hits to chose from and allow them to get solid sense of what their sound is all about. Currently their page showcases tracks off their newly released mix tape. Even though the page is a great way to learn a little bit about the guys, you won’t regret having this album stashed in your CD collection.
If you love anyone from the Talib Kweli to N.E.R.D, or the 80’s moguls The Beastie Boys you will have no problem bumping The Bake Sale. As their track “Flossin” so clearly states, they “floss so, floss so, floss so hard” and will have your windows down, bass turned all the way up and head bopping in seconds.
