The Virgins, a band Originating from the Eden of innovative creativity and talent--New York City--The Virgins began their journey in 2005. When lead vocal Donald Cumming and guitarist Wade Oates co-composed some tracks, it soon resulting in drummer Erik Ratensperger and bassist Nick Zarin-Ackerman to tag along. An EP was released in 2007 titled, "The Virgins 2007" and more recently a self-titled LP distributed in June 2008. This particular rock band presents not only the retrograde funk euphony--but they somehow are able to capture the attitude of an era none before them has been able to achieve. In an interview, Donald Cummng revealed a glimpse of the band’s outlook on their music that reflects the carefree rock and rollers of different time, "We embrace that aesthetic of being creative and having fun and not being uptight and so precious about everything."
In essence, The Virgins offer a mix of the "I coulda been a contender" pre-godfather swagger of Marlon Brando and the badass strut of Denzel Washington. In the EP version of "Rich Girls"—the LP’s first single-- it was as if Terry Malloy uttered those words himself to his lovely Edie Doyle.
"Private Affair" is one of those songs a girl can't help but take a joyride in a vintage mustang to--the windows down wearing a sexy slip, stilettos heels, and tousled hair with a slight smudge of smoky coal black eyeliner defining her incredibly features. It would prompt any guy to wear converses in an Armani suit with a graphic tee and skinny tie. Their music breathes a raw, undignified fearlessness only those bold enough will think twice to recognize The Virgins.
With the uniqueness of Donald Cumming’s vocals and lewd lyrics--they are not a band to listen to if the atmosphere of choice is for a wine and cheese tasting gathering, or a cup of hot cocoa by a cozy fire Oates’s electric guitar licks and Zarin-Ackerman’s bass guitar’s distinguished rhythms mold together perfectly with the lyrics, leaving a distinct hallow sound overall that doesn't leave the listener feeling warm and inspired, but fierce and cocky. Prepare to subconsciously begin to gasconade a strut and have an undeniable urge to rebel against the world and her pretty petite standards.
Even though The Virgins 2007 EP carries a much more original concept, The Virgins have nonetheless made their impact. Already featured in popular television dramas such as “Gossip Girls” and talk shows such as “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” this band is worth watching out for--that is if they can keep their swagger attitude.
The Virgins have great potential and deserves 4 out of 5 woovies. |
