October 14th 2008 Lotus released a third studio album called Hammerstrike and then Jupiter exploded. Lotus is a five piece instrumental band that combines extensive jams and synthesizers to create what amounts to trance music without using computers. They are known for their live concerts, Lotus implement electronic gizmos and complex light arrangements to create a rave like atmosphere. Lotus is a five piece instrumental band that is making waves in the jam band scene. They use a lot of electronics in their music and play for extensive periods of time, creating a fusion of jam and techno. On each of the album’s ten tracks Lotus relies on guitars and bass, synthesizers and a drum kit to create an array of different themes and sounds. One noticeable tone in Hammerstrike is an affinity for the wreck less attitude of adolescence. Some songs exemplify this through their title, like “Invincibility of Youth”. Others like the “Age of Inexperience” demonstrate this theme through its lyrics “no regrets, no turning back… like stone teenagers we’re free”. Lyrics from Bellweather shed light on the band’s goals for this album. A deep synthesized voice emphasizes a need for innovation bellowing “out with old, in the new”; a notion that Lotus takes to heart in almost every song. The band incorporates many instruments like the banjo, violins, vocoders and even a horns section in “Turquoise”. “One Last Hurrah” sounds reminiscent, like songs played at graduation ceremonies. For those not familiar with Lotus, start with Nomad. This album is well put together, but it lacks the trance laden grooves seen in their early music. However, those who enjoy Lotus will not be disappointed with this album. 3.5 Woovies
