Björk and Dirty Projectors have collaborated to make a mini-LP, released yesterday June 30th. Proceeds from the album go to the National Geographic Society. You can hear the track “All We Are” on Domino Record’s website. The track’s appeal comes from Björk’s breathy vocals, seamlessly combined with Dirty Projectors lead singer Dave Longstreth’s eerie, stinging voice. Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes and Beck also share a duet, in the new release, “Let’s Get Lost”. With Khan’s heartfelt passion and Beck’s skill at synth-pop, the song sounds far away but warm and comforting, emotional, and stunning. Off Chop Shop Records, you can hear it (whether you find this good or bad news) off the newest Twilight soundtrack. If you enjoy the sunny, shimmering indie pop with strong female vocals, check out the “Boyfriend”, a new release from noise-pop band Best Coast. The track’s sad, lonesome lyrics come with a bright melody and endearing lead singer Bethany Cosentino’s panging, girl-next-door voice. The track can be listened to at pitchfork.com and will be released July 27 off Mexican Summer Records, the album named Crazy for You. Other Notable Releases A noisier, more jarring Beach Boys, the California band Wavves released a new album, King of the Beach, off Fat Possum records. Listeners of the power pop band have enjoyed the new album because of its sunny, catchy, carefree vibe and energies. American glam rock band, Scissor Sisters, released a new album on June 28, named Night Work. The single, “Fire with Fire”, has a different style and sound than the debut work of band known for its highly danceable tunes and flashy style. “Fire with Fire” has more focus and more of a low-key energy, but fans of synth, dance, disco, and pop will still be pleased with the album’s other, more upbeat tracks. Released June 14th, the singles album from English alternative rock band Oasis, Time Flies…1994-2009, went straight to number 1 in the UK Albums Chart in its first week. The album contains the band’s 27 singles, including “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back in Anger”, as well as 2 never released tracks. Radiohead drummer Phil Selway will release his debut solo album, Familial in August. You can check out the soft, hushed single online, called “By Some Miracle”. Indie rock band Deerhunter has been mixing a new LP with Ben Allen, who engineered and mixed Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood, who signed the Apples in Stereo to his own Simian Records, has now composed a benefit album: Elysium: A Benefit for The Art of Elysium. It features Sonic Youth, Sleigh Bells, Black Mountain, the Kills, Malachai, The Soft Pack, and more. All proceeds go to the Art of Elysium, a nonprofit that brings musicians in to work with hospitalized children. Arcade Fire will perform on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show on August 12, about a week after they release their new album, The Suburbs. Record label Matador will celebrate their 21st birthday this October, and the final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at their blog on July 5. Lineup includes a previously broken up Guided By Voices, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Cold Cave, Kurt Vile, Girls, and Cat Power. |
