Twin brothers Alex and Nels Cline have traced divergent paths through the musical landscape through the years. Initially they jammed together in a few of their earlier bands, but as time went by they began to blaze their own separate trails through the different territories of music. While both have shared the stage with jazz luminaries, percussionist Alex’s most recent efforts have been marked by an eye towards composition, while guitarist Nels has variously offered some jam-band inflected improvisation in The Nels Cline Singers, noisy and far out guitar on Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky, and now 2009’s freaked out overdub solo effort Coward. In contrast, Alex’s album Continuation offers a meditation on dialectic between control and improvisation. The brothers Cline may be twins in look, but as can been seen on their latest releases they each have a separate style of their own. |
