Transmitter Update - Slow Going
Written by Kevin Sterne
I know it’s been a while since I've posted anything new about the transmitter project update.  But it's mostly due to two things: 1, I didn't want to distract people from thinking about Radiothon and 2, there hasn't been much going on.

Firstly, about distracting from Radiothon...obviously I didn't!  Thanks so much for making yet another Radiothon a success and continuing on the operations of WUVT.

Secondly, as to what has been going on.  I realized I haven't written you since we knocked the wall down in the building.  Well, not much is different there now.  Josh, Dan, and I did take one nice weekend to start on the construction of our ice guard.  This guard will protect our lines that will run from the tower to the building from falling ice.  A good piece of ice falling on an unprotected line can cause thousands upon thousands of dollars of damage.  We still have a few finishing off items on the ice guard, but the majority is complete.  Josh and I also took a not so great weather weekend installed the
vent hoods onto the outside of the building.  There are three vents in the building as of right now.  One will be boarded up, one will serve as an air intake, and the last one as an air output since it has a blower fan in the vent.

So what exactly HAVE I been doing?  There's been a bit of paperwork to do for the finishing actions of
the site.  I've got to get some paperwork done so that Montgomery County can re-zone the site location and that they can be assured that we won't be raising the height of the tower by more than 10 feet (some kind of weird tower ordinance in Montgomery Co.).  Once the re-zoning is done, then I can file for the building and electrical permit for the site.  Then we can have out electricians come and install all the equipment and eventually have the county inspector inspect the site.  I've been talking with some higher-ups and hope to get some help from them on filing these official documents.  Things look
promising, but we've yet to get to work on it.

We've already got some electricians lined up to help us out so all we need is the official paperwork.  Otherwise, I also have lined up our antenna hanging crew and hope to be hanging the antenna after the paperwork goes through and we have a nice weather weekend.

We did hit another snag as well though.  Josh and I and the electricians went to inspect the generator that was being donated to us, and it didn't look good.  The generator has been sitting, unused and unprotected from the weather on top of Poor Mountain for several years.  Most of the parts are rusted together and it's been reported the engine won't even turn.  So for now, we'll plan to leave room in the  electrical work for a future generator.  And if as sometime we can get one for cheap, we'll stick it in there.

Again, many, many thanks for those of you who contributed to the radio station and made this one yet ANOTHER Radiothon in which we've out-done the previous year.

Some questions have come up as to what I myself am doing.  I can now report to you that I have not finished off my thesis yet and so it looks like I will be graduating in December.  I was planning to stay around until December/January anyways to finish off those projects I said I'd do when I had more time.  Because I'll still be around, I'll be finishing off this transmitter project and Mr. Chris Anna will be taking over the helm of Chief Engineer.

Anywho, now it's time to get some more paperwork done.
