DJ Spotlight: DJ Plum!

written by Declan Wasnock on

WUVT has a wide array of DJs, most of which are Virginia Tech students (past and present). Baile Liu, better known among WUVT listeners as DJ Plum, spins a wide range of music for the New River Valley. A mechanical engineering senior, Liu is one of WUVT's best! Check out DJ Plum's show from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesdays for an eclectic selection of tracks both new and old!

How did you get the name DJ Plum?

I ate a lot of plums as a kid, and I think plums are a little obscure. I like the color. I think they're Chinese, and I'm also Chinese, so it's kind of connected to that. I knew I wanted, a fruit name or a play on fruit.

How did you get started at WUVT?

It was summer and I was commuting 50 minutes every day for work to Roanoke, and I was tired of listening to my own music, so I started flipping through the radio, which is something I don't usually do. I turned on WUVT, and there was two of these DJs that I heard. They were talking very candidly about college radio, and I instantly understood what it was and what they did it for. I thought: Surely I can start doing this too, I've been a music fan all my life! I wanted to do something different because my life revolved around school and engineering in my design club, which is great. It's my passion, but WUVT became a second space I could go to instead of all that. I really enjoy having a show and being able to come here and introduce new music to the masses. I also learned a lot about live shows and stuff while I was here, which is something I had never gotten to experience. WUVT has introduced me to a lot of new things.

What is it like that you're now a senior and what's been your favorite part of being a WUVT DJ?

I like having a show; That's really all I need to be able to come here and be in the space. Also, I really like all the people that I met through here. I probably would have never met Amir ('25-'26 General Manager, DJ Brainz), or any of the other people on staff. I like talking to different kinds of people, and I wasn't really exposed to that until I became a DJ. Before I joined WUVT, I would go to the lab for eight hours, go to class, and see the same people every day because we're all engineers. WUVT really broadened my college experience in a way.

What does a typical DJ Plum show, look like?

Usually I start my shows with a piece of music that I've liked for a long time, or something that I've just been listening to a lot during that week, and then I'll just build off of that stuff I'm playing. Sometimes I'll do a themed show, too. During Radiothon I've had some cool shows - one year I had a show called the "Fruit Platter," where I played songs about fruit. Another year, I had a show called "All About Frank," where I only played songs by people named Frank, that cracked me up. Baile Pic 3

What would you say to anyone joining WUVT now, or would be interested in joining? What would advice would you give them?

I would say enjoy your time you have here. You can sometimes take a show for granted, or you're just thinking about other stuff while you're here. Try and listen to as much music as you can. Talk to the other members of the station, which is something I didn't really do until I started attending more events. Go to as many events as you can, meet all the people, they're all super great. That's why I recommend just getting more involved. Not just in WUVT, but whatever you're into.
