Tortoise's music remains as complex as ever. Tortoise get remarkable mileage out of their signature juxtaposition of knotty rhythms and chiming clarity effortlessly connecting the intricacies of shifting tempos and harmonic variations.

WOO Whichever Way You Are Going, You Are Wrong Album Cover

WOO - Whichever Way You Are Going, You Are Wrong

Label: Independent Project Records
Genre: NCP
Reviewed by: Hayden Swenson
Originally released in 1982, this is an expanded reissue of WOO's debut album. WOO is Mark and Clive Ives, brothers who combine folk and jazz instrumentation with synthesizers to create a unique brand of emotive new-age ambient pop. Lo-fi production, minimalist arrangements, and copious experimentation lend the album an ethereal, mysterious atmosphere. These tracks rarely feature a climax; instead, they slowly envelop you in their swirling, dream-like soundscapes. The bonus tracks (13-22) are not as good as those featured on the original album but are still very nice. All tracks are instrumental except 6, which features some lovely Eno-esque vocals!

Lucinda Williams World Gone Wrong Album Cover

Lucinda Williams - World Gone Wrong

Label: Highway 20 Records
Genre: Alt Country
Reviewed by: Linda DeVito
World's Gone Wrong is the 16th album from Roots Rock-Americana-Alt Country genius Lucinda Williams. The title track is performed solo at the end of the album and starts the album with the help of Brittney Spencer. Norah Jones helps out on We've Come Too Far & Mavis Staples joins in on the Bob Marley cover of So Much Trouble in The World. This album features songwriting from Ms. Williams & her collaborators. To say this is an activist protest album is an understatement. Play every song. They are all worth the air time! This album came out at just the right time for those of us in America that can't believe what we are seeing. No silence! Play this album.

Rhode Island outfit with a guitar-led sludgy vibe underneath a shoegaze veil. If the Wedding Present did shoegaze or it you took elements of Ride’s Nowhere and slowed it down, it might come across a bit like Exploding Zones.

Elise Trouw The Diary of Elon Lust Album Cover

Elise Trouw - The Diary of Elon Lust

Label: Midtopia
Genre: Dance Pop/Alt Indie
Reviewed by: Len Comaratta
Exploring themes of entitlement and objectification through a fictional male alter ego, Trouw delivers a satirical, artistic commentary on the misogynistic comments and inappropriate attention she’s often faced. Often described as technical and experimental, she is primarily recognized as a multi-instrumentalist (drums, guitar, bass, piano) blending genres and frequently using loop pedals to create complex, one-woman band performances.

June Swoon Big Truck ep Album Cover

June Swoon - Big Truck ep

Label: Self
Genre: Alt Pop Rock
Reviewed by: Kennedy Malcolm
June Swoon's Big Truck EP comes after two previously self-produced albums and provides a variety of sound in just five songs. Sonically, her music merges a picture of garage grunge and a long desert travel - providing a sometimes chaotic, yet still coherent story to follow across the EP. She tells a story conveying the ache of solitude and the sweetness of freedom as an outlaw.

Soulwax All Systems are Lying Album Cover

Soul Wax - All Systems are Lying

Label: Because
Genre: Electronic
Reviewed by: Alicya James
With a very electronic funk, All Systems Are Lying refines Soulwax's futuristic edge into something deeply intentional. The tracks are assembled with some stank synths, live drums, and warped voices while the lack of guitar makes the album’s electro-punk energy more potent. Overall, a pretty futuristic album that takes you out of this world.
