This EP soars from beginning to end! The Fearless Flyers, a Vulfpeck adjacent band, are a modern reincarnation of legendary instrumental funk groups like Booker T. & the M.G.'s, The Meters, and the Muscle Shoals Swampers. The Fearless Flyers' sound is unique, however, as they combine guitar (Cory Wong), bass (Joe Dart), and drums (Nate Smith) but trade out the traditional keyboard (or organ) for baritone electric guitar (Mark Lattieri). Their fourth EP, IV, was recorded live during a residency at NYC's Blue Note Jazz Club in December 2023.

The album's tracks are titled after US and international military aerobatics teams. The lead track, Blue Angels, is a bass-powered funk locomotive, highlighted by a unison guitar/baritone/bass walking riff. Red Arrows - my favorite track - is a tight, crispy burner featuring a mid-song breakdown and signature Nate Smith syncopated drum fiesta. Patrouille de France, the third track, is a twangy blues jam hosting Cory Wong's drippy guitar solo. On Frecce Tricolori, check out the echoes of Steely Dan in the opening and closing riff! Snowbirds mixes the sounds of the Doobie Brothers and Funkadelic, highlighted by a melodic Joe Dart bass solo. The angular last track, Thunderbird, features a wacky, heavily synthesized Mark Lettieri guitar solo (listen for Gerswhin's Rhapsody in Blue!).

However, as good as this album sounds, don't forget to check out the companion video online. With their signature sunglasses, auto-mechanic coveralls, and strapless guitars, the Fearless Flyers are a fun visual experience, too.

"The Engineering Staff at WUVT is in charge of keeping audio flowing from our studio to the transmitter. With 100-something DJs using the studio each week, this is easier said than done.

We’re sorta like tech support for the studio equipment. Whenever something breaks, WUVT engineers are the ones who duct tape it back together (or talk the DJ through how to duct tape it themselves).

We also work proactively; constantly making improvements to the station (or at least trying to).

In addition to maintenance, we also work closely with the Production Staff to set up WUVT’s various live events. WUVT uses a lot of heavy equipment to host shows, and with the right amount of people, we can get an entire show set up in 10 minutes.

As the Chief Engineer, my job is to understand how the station’s audio network works, and to coordinate the Engineering Staff so that we can tackle problems in a somewhat-organized manner. I also work directly with alumni in the field to learn how professional stations operate, acquire new equipment, and keep our transmitter running."

Why Did We Get a New Transmitter? What Does It Do?

"Natalie (we give our transmitters names) is a giant, refrigerator-sized device that lives in a shack near our antenna on Price Mountain. Its job is to take an audio signal, turn it into an FM radio signal, and then scream it out of our antenna at 6.5 kilowatts.
Our old transmitter, Harriett, had been in constant operation for over 25 years. Its electronics were getting worn down by heat, and it could only output 96% of the power it used to. Coupled with the fact that it was getting expensive to fix, we decided that it'd be best to get a new transmitter, and make Harriett our backup.

The thing is, you can’t just go downtown and buy a commercial FM transmitter. These things are large, complex, and expensive; so buying and installing a new one is quite an operation.

But, thanks to the generous contributions of our alumni, donors, and management, we were able to secure the funds and resources needed to make it happen. Because of their help, WUVT will not need a new transmitter for the next 25 years (knock on wood)."

What's the Most Challenging Engineering "Problem" That Occurred During Your Time at WUVT?

"Funnily enough, the craziest problem that I’ve come across happened the same day as the transmitter installation.
The night before the install, we were changing the connectors on the CD players out because of some interference issues. But in the process, the connector for the right channel on one player was accidentally soldered backwards; the positive wire was connected where the negative one should go, and vice versa. This, in turn, caused the audio signal through that connector to be negative when it was supposed to be positive; essentially flipping it upside down. We’d basically multiplied the signal by -1.This doesn’t sound like a significant issue, both figuratively and literally. Speakers and audio stuff don’t really care whether the signal is the right way up or not. They’ll play it anyway, and we didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary when we were testing the players out afterwards. It all sounded fine in the station. The problem is when the audio gets sent to the transmitter.

In short, we send two audio channels to the transmitter; one for left and one for right. But older radios can’t handle two audio channels, only a single audio channel. So the transmitter needs to take the two channels and turn them into one.
It does this by literally adding the left and right channels together. This normally works fine, but remember that we’d accidentally multiplied the right channel by -1. So instead of adding, the right channel is being subtracted from the left one.
This means that the transmitter was broadcasting the difference between the left and right channels, which sounds absolutely crazy if you tune in to it.

We were unaware of this issue until right after the install, when we turned on the radio to hear the fruits of our labor, only to be met by the most deranged mix of Tom Sawyer we’ve ever heard.
It’s funny in hindsight, but at the time we were all worried that we’d need to spend another day fixing the transmitter. It was only after some further testing we were able to narrow the issue down to a single CD player in the FM Studio.
This just goes to show how a simple problem can present itself in a way you don’t expect, which happens a lot in the Engineering Staff’s line of work.

That’s why I enjoy being in Engineering, though. We get to do detective work to find out what’s going wrong, and then fix the problem. It’s a ton of fun!"

Any and all of these tracks should be played. Super cool guitar licks with entrancing, sorta warbly vocals from riot grrrl legends. Definitely prefer the grungier tracks on this album -- tracks 5 and 7 are reminiscent of their '90s style and other groups like Bikini Kill.

The first three tracks really had me worried this was going to be boring, but man was I INCREDIBLY wrong. Apart from the slow start, this album is an improvement from their previous album, and a confirmation of all the things that have made Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood forces to be reckoned with in the world of rock for over 30 years. Incredible arrangements that are complex but still recognizably rock and pop. Bending Hectic is one of the coolest songs I've heard in forever.

Regional artist; Catbells joins the indie pop community with her debut album, Partly Cloudy! Catbells' soothing voice and catchy acoustic guitar licks alongside a great use of synths keep you finding new things to listen for within each track. It's an odd comparison, but I just can not stop thinking about this album, in some ways, sounds like Rebecca Sugar's early work, but more fresh and organic. Any song from this album could be played on-air, but make sure to abide by those delicious FCC rules. Great album by a great musician. I believe they have a great future in the indie pop scene. 8/10 would recommend.

Bill Ryder Jones delivers his first album of 2024 and his sixth studio album with "lechyd Da." This album is very nice to listen to, almost angelic. The best way I can describe it is when your mother sang lullabies to you when you were a baby. This album is angel soft and very fun at the same time. Bill Ryder Jones' voice is pleasant when mixed with piano and soft drums. There are some FCC tracks on this record but almost any of the songs here can be played on-air and enjoyed by many! Very fun and enjoyable album.

Pushing a more experimental mode, this jazz album is really accomplished, and great to listen to. It sounds something like Thelonious Monk at its best, but wine bar chic at worst. The last three tracks go really wild. Also, there's theremin on this album, so how could you not like it?

Oh. My. God. This album is AWESOME! The little rocking boy in me is screaming. Coming into this record, I was expecting to be hearing soft indie pop but instead, I was SLAMMED with pure shock of how grungy and punky this album can be. Any song off this record could be played on-air and I completely encourage it! One of the best albums I have ever reviewed for WUVT. Enjoy some nice and fun punk alongside ANGELIC vocals from Sienna Chandler. It's so refreshing to listen to this album! 9/10 would recommend!

Relatively standard indie rock/pop/electro album, but has enough nuances and interesting crescendos to be cool. Soft vocals reminiscent of RIYL and (if being generous) Mitski. They're really nice in the mix, giving an intimate feel without being whispery and monotone. The other two major components are a soft strumming acoustic guitar and gently reverberating hats. A more orchestral grand piano also pops in on the later half adding some nice texture.
Fall Premiums Shipped + Ready For Pickuphttps://www.wuvt.vt.edu/article/fall-24-premiums2024-01-28T19:58:33.496435+00:002024-01-28T19:58:33.496435+00:00Amir Lahoud
Fall 2023 Radiothon premiums are ready!
