Gillies vegetarian restaurant, beloved by local residents, was kind enough to host another show with WUVT on Saturday, September 19th. Three bands performed, each contributing their own style of musical fusion to the event. The first of which was Camp Howard, formally known as Nic Perea if you’re searching for their tunes on bandcamp. They were a mellow, vibey, and easy-to-listen to indie-rock group from Richmond, VA composed of high school friends Nic Perea (lead vocals/guitar),Wes Parker (guitar), Brian Larson (drums), and Matt Benson (bass). The crowd was extremely responsive to their bright guitar riffs and put-together instrumentation. The mood was light; at one point during the set, Wes jokingly requested lipstick from the audience. When he actually received some, he laughed and said he “didn’t know how to apply those things.” Friends of the band say this was one of the best shows they’ve seen from Camp Howard and the experience was overall, as the kids are saying these days, “very hype.”

The second band was called Collin Thibodeauxx, a self-proclaimed “zoot rock” group also from Richmond. Sounding faintly like the Black Keys, this grungey, bluesy, and occassionally, surf-sounding four piece more than captured the attention of the crowd with their driven leads and tight, upbeat rhythm. The drummer looked like he was having the time of his life. At one point, he ripped off his shirt in response to the scene being created. Halfway through, the band launched into a cover of “Sweater Song,” which was very well received. One often cannot help but indulge such classic 90s sadboy bangers.

Two Inch Astronaut, a post-punk dischord rock group from Coleville, MD, gave the final performance. The lead guitar and vocalist, Matt Gatwood, transitioned smoothly from ambient sounds and flowy guitar buildups to intense full-strum breakdowns with the rest of his bandmates. The overall turnout for this event was pleasantly high, and we hope Gillies continues hosting WUVT-sponsored shows in the upcoming year. Go peep all these awesome bands on Facebook and bandcamp!!
